Area Attractions: About Pine Island
Welcome to Pine Island, Minnesota. Located along the beautiful banks of the Zumbro River, Pine Island is a 15-minute drive north from Rochester and less than an hour south of the Twin Cities. With one of the state’s busiest highways bisecting us, exposure and convenience in transportation are exceptional.
Plan your visit around one or more of our city’s seasonal events: the Cheese Festival, Winter Fest, Citywide Garage Sales, or the Island Classics Car Shows. While you’re here, enjoy our establishments throughout the city—savor a cup of coffee, explore the historic downtown district, catch a concert at the theatre, or challenge friends to a game of bowling. For a complete list of Chamber membership, visit our Directory.
Our community is rich with history: Pine Island was given its name from the Native American phrase "Wazuweeta" meaning Isle of Pines. In 1911 a group of small dairies built a prize-winning, world-record 6,000 pound cheese on a railroad flatcar. We celebrate the Cheese Festival every June and the historic Creamery building is used for a variety of community events. 3,400 and growing residents celebrate our heritage and find that opportunities for recreation and business here are unlimited. Come to visit, come to stay, and be a part of our quaint and growing community. We’ll see you on the banks of the Zumbro!
